Using Photoshop to restore photos

I'm not a photo-restoration expert, but this project was very challenging because I didn't want it to look like this:
(the colors are way too saturated to look "normal")
Janet, the "client" (tee hee) desired her mom to be in a picture by herself.
(The handsome woman in b&w).
An hour and lots of photoshop-ing later I got this:
